Annual Walleye Derby continues in Greg Horoky’s memory

by Sylene Argent, Local Journalism Initiative

Since 1992, fishermen and anglers have launched their boats in the Lake Erie water to compete in the well-established Greg Horoky Colchester Walleye Fishing Derby.

Not only does this local event put a spotlight on the Colchester area and its designation as the “Walleye Capital of Canada” earned back in 2007, it offers great prizes, good food, fun entertainment, and an opportunity to exchange tips of the trade, and perhaps even share a story or two with others just as impassioned about this hobby.

This year’s event on Saturday hit a little different, as one of its long-time organizers, the individuals after whom the derby is named, passed on April 19 at the age of 74. Horoky was a retired Police Officer and the first Canadian to win a Professional Walleye Tournament.

Ray Fischer, a member of the Rotary Club of Harrow which organizes the annual event, said it was tough coordinating the derby in the wake of Horoky’s passing.

“He had a vision,” Fischer said of Horoky and his dreams for the derby. He will miss having meetings with Horoky after each derby to discuss what could have gone better. “You can’t replace him; what he has done for this community. We want to expand on that.”

As long as the Harrow Rotary Club organizes the annual event, Fischer said it will always be the Greg Horoky Colchester Walleye Fishing Derby.

“This would not be possible without Greg. He’s a legend,” Fischer said. “He’s definitely, truly missed.”

On the day, event organizers recognized the efforts of Shawn Bezaire and Jeff Anderson with the “Above and Beyond Award” for lending their fishing expertise in helping to organize this year’s derby. Fischer said Horoky arranged to have the duo help out, and their time and effort was very much appreciated.

“They’ve been phenomenal,” Fischer said, noting this special recognition award will be something they plan to hand out each year.

The event would not be possible without the many who volunteer, he added.

In addition, a special presentation was also made to Hospice in Horoky’s honour.

Though this year’s tournament was met with some rainy weather, Fischer was pleased to announce there were over 80 boats launched into the water with over 300 fishermen aboard, ready to cast their line and try their luck at reeling in the biggest catch of the day. Prizes were awarded for the top submissions.

As always, the fishermen were able to take advantage of the breakfast sandwiches and coffee members of the Rotary Club and volunteers prepared for the event before they launched.

New this year, all fishermen received a towel – equipped with a hanging clip, derby logo, and sponsorship logo. This was something Horoky talked about getting for the participants this year, and they were able to make it happen at this derby.

In addition, around 160 youths were out on the dock participating in the Kids’ Derby, where they took the time with their parents, grandparents, or guardian to get introduced to the sport, enjoy a hot dog lunch, receive a Bass Pro Shop hat, grab bag with gift certificates, lures, snacks, raffle tickets, and the chance compete and win prizes in the biggest fish competition.

Seeing the kids out on the dock is a moving moment for Fischer. He was especially proud of his wife for the work she puts in to organize this busy portion of the day’s festivities.

In addition to the derby, fishermen and community members onsite were invited to participate in an array of activities at Colchester Harbour Park, including a cornhole tournament, while listening in on live music, and stopping by the Kinsmen beverage tent and food vendors. Youths could enjoy the bouncy castle, face painting, and entertainment.

Though it is too early to say just how much money the event raised, Fischer believes the 2025 event will surpass last year’s amount. Proceeds benefit community projects.
