With the sun shining down, the streets of Harrow came alive with community spirit and camaraderie on Friday night, as the Harrow and Colchester South Chamber of Commerce hosted its final "Open Streets" event of 2025.
The downtown area was bustling with activity, featuring a vibrant mix of local businesses, vendor pop-ups, and nonprofit booths. Community members were invited to enjoy an evening of shopping, entertainment, and delicious food — all while supporting local entrepreneurs and organizations.
Attendees browsed one-of-a-kind items, sampled offerings from local food and drink vendors, and enjoyed live entertainment throughout the evening. The event not only showcased Harrow’s small business community, but also highlighted the contributions of local nonprofits that dedicate their time and effort to these festivals.
“One of our goals, along with the Town of Essex, which has been fantastic to work with, is to continue bringing the community together and supporting local businesses,” Nancy Burke of the Harrow and Colchester South Chamber of Commerce said. “It’s incredible how much support we get. We’re all volunteers, including members of the Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, and many others. Events like this help raise funds for great local charities and nonprofits, too.”
The Open Streets tradition began around 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, as a way to safely unite the community and support local businesses. Since then, the event has grown significantly, now spanning two separate evenings and featuring over 30 vendors.
Friday night’s atmosphere was amplified by live music from the Timmy Mac Band, which performed on the main stage surrounded by vendor booths. At the other end of the street, a classic car show drew crowds with its mix of vintage gems, modern favourites, and unique custom builds.
“When the idea first came about, we hoped it would catch on,” Burke added. “But to see it not only continue, but grow and evolve over the years — it’s been amazing. The community has really embraced it. Everyone’s chatting, exploring booths, enjoying themselves — and that’s what we’re all about. We’re excited for next year and hopefully more to come.”
Burke expressed her gratitude to the community for its continued support, especially the volunteers, local sponsors, and the Town of Essex, whose collaboration makes the event possible.
Looking ahead, the Harrow and Colchester South Chamber of Commerce is already planning New Year’s Eve festivities, along with several other year-end events. Updates and announcements can be found on its official website or social media page.
