Sunny Britches celebrates Canada Day on the farm

by Sylene Argent

With agriculture being a significant industry in this country, many took the opportunity to explore Sunny Britches Acres Petting Farm on Canada Day as it was open for holiday tours.

The local petting farm provided area families plenty to do while they learned about agriculture and animal care on Canada Day, with event attendees able to enjoy a hayride around the property, shop at local vendor displays, and learn the history of farming with a special demonstration set up by the Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Museum.

Children were also able to play in a sandbox, jump around in a bouncy castle, and enjoy a playground area.

Likely the biggest draw of the event was being able to pet some of the farm animals and learn all about the type of care they require each and every day.

Owner of Sunny Britches Acres Petting Farm, Nicole Hackett, noted special events are held at the local petting farm on holidays, such as Canada Day. The event allows those who may not have access to the community’s rural roots a chance to learn about alpacas, goats, pigs, emus, cows, mini horses, sheep, and all sorts of poultry and bird species onsite, and even get a chance to feed and pet the animals.

The day is just about having fun, and connecting people with farm life.

Before heading home, eventgoers were able to support the Comber Poultry 4H Club, which hosted a barbeque onsite as a 4H fundraiser.

In addition to hosting special holiday events, Hackett noted Sunny Britches is a destination for local day camp and youth club orientated field trips. This past spring, she said, over 400 youths visited the farm to learn about farm life.

Sunny Britches also welcomes visitors during its summer hours, Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 10am-3pm.
