Town of Essex partners with area schools to host Legacy Tree Planting on Earth Day

by Essex Free Press Staff

On Earth Day, the Town of Essex partnered with local schools to host the annual Legacy Tree Planting.

This traditional program plants a tree at local schools that the graduating students leave for the young students to care for. This teaches them environmental awareness and helps connect them to nature.

Last Wednesday, the Town of Essex was able to plant native trees at St. Anthony, Ste. Ursule, Holy Name Catholic Elementary School, Colchester North Public School, and Essex Public School.

Members of Town staff and Council were onsite to not only bring greetings for the program, but also to help dig.

“We all play an important role in growing the future of our planet together,” Essex’s Director of Community Services, Jake Morassut, told the students at the tree planting at Essex Public School. He added that planting the tree is a promise to care for and respect the land upon which everyone lives.

He urged the students to do what they can to care for the tree.

“A strong community, like a healthy tree, is built from deep roots and caring hands.”
